This is the week for the Bloggy Giveaways! What a great opportunity for you to enter contests on the internet to win FREE things. I am going to do several giveaways, if I can locate a certain box that I packed up for this event. (Over the week-end, my husband and I moved my bookstore.)
Today’s giveaway would be a great addition to any home with students in grades 2 and up. I am giving away three books. They are, as follows:
  • Vocabulary Builders by Weekly Reader (grades 2-3)
  • Mind Benders: Deductive Thinking Skills (grades 3-6+)
  • State: The Facts (a guide to studying your state) Grades 3 and up

This contest is open to anyone in the 50 United States. I am sorry that I cannot offer this internationally at this time. I have had some recent bad experiences with customs’ fees, and I have had packages retruned at my cost.

You may enter the contest by commenting on this post. I will enable Open Commenting for those of you who do not have blogs. It will make the contest easier for me to administer. I will need a valid email address to contact the winner.

I will pick a winner for this contest at 9:00 pm EST on Saturday, November 1, 2008. I will pick a random number. Depending on the number of entries, I will either draw a number from a hat, or I will use a random number generator.

Thank you Bloggy Giveaways for sponsoring this fun carnival!!!

Ghost Story

As she looked through the mist across the lake, she thought she saw a glimpse of her first love. It was night of the anniversary of the first time she met him. As her thoughts drifted back to that night 50 years ago her granddaughter sat on a nearby swing watching a smile come across her weathered face.

On that night, her thoughts were already consumed with thoughts of her now deceased husband. They had shared many happy days and nights out by the lake in the cabin she now calls home. She had been telling her granddaughter stories about her courtship with her first love. She talked about the long, summer nights of sitting in the small row boat as her beau rowed them across the small lake.

She told her granddaughter how this handsome young man captured her heart so many years ago and how he had to leave for the war across the Atlantic shortly after they met. She held in her hands the letters neatly wrapped by a red ribbon, as she tearfully told her how they exchanged letters for three long years, before he came back home to her, never knowing if he would ever come home alive.

She reminisced about their engagement soon after he came home from the war. She lovingly described their first little house. The house that was full of love of two young adults who longed to be parents. And she laughingly remembered the days of having more mouths to feed than rooms in that tiny house.

She showed pictures of the house that he built for her and their growing family. And she talked about their children frolicking in the very lake they sat beside on this misty night. Her granddaughter could almost see the ghost of her grandfather whom she had never met. She knew that surely he must never be far from his one and only love. She strained her eyes for just a glimpse of this man who made her grandmother smile.

As the time grew later and the mist grew thicker, she knew it was almost time to retire for the night, but then she looked at the smile across her grandmother’s face and knew that they would sit by lake for a while longer. Maybe she would see the ghost of her grandfather before the night was over.

Milestone Birthday

Happy Birthday to my daughter, Ashley! Today she is 18 years old. Where did the time go? It seems like just yesterday she was born, and now she is old enough to vote in the Presidential Election! She is a beautiful girl inside and out. And I am very proud of her. We will spend some time celebrating her life today.

Healthy Homeschool Moms

Recently my homeschool group has started a healthy homeschool moms group. It has been a lot of fun! For some reason, I have not made exercise a priority in my schedule. And for the past 3 weeks, I have exercised several days a week. Since we are on a tight budget right now, along with the rest of America, I am finding creative ways to exercise. I have been walking at a walking track at a local elementary school. And on inclement weather days, I am utilizing our mini-trampoline. I am also incorporating a healthier, low-fat menu into my life, along with drinking a lot of water each day.

What are you doing to be a healthy homeschool mom?
