Running Encouragement

Running encouragement

tami-hiddenite-half-2016-1

The runners I have met have been encouraging to me in my running journey. Runners are a friendly bunch. Maybe it’s the endorphins we get from running. Maybe it’s because we remember when we started running. I have friends who are very fast runners, and I have friends who are back of the pack runners. We can always find common ground for the love of the sport. I have been in races where people encourage one another throughout the race. When I have been struggling in a race, that shout of encouragement has pulled me though the rough patch. In one race, I was quite sick, and as I was at the back of the pack. The clean-up crew encouraged me for several miles to just keep at it and put one foot in front of the other. In my first 5K, I was struggling coming up the last hill to the finish line when one of the guys who finished at the front of the pack came back on the course and ran with me to get me across the finish line. When I look back at the pictures from that race, I remember how I felt when I finished the race. Every time I race now, I encourage the runners behind me to keep with it and finish the race. Winning is finishing. The pace does not matter.

Spectators on a race course are encouraging. Running is a mental sport and a physical sport. My longest race so far has been a marathon. Throughout the course, schools set up at various locations to sing or play instruments to encourage us. It was one run where I did not need headphones. I was entertained the whole time. Signs along the race course either placed along the course or held by spectators is also encouraging to those of us who are running. Sometimes you just need a little encouragement to get you to the next thing.

Training runs can get to be monotonous if you run alone. You can find encouragement by running with friends when you need a change. I typically run by myself, but I will run a long run with a friend who runs a similar pace. It’s easy to talk while you run, and before you know it, you have finished your run. Your running friend is an encouragement for you, and you are an encouragement for your friend. It’s mutually beneficial.

Runners can also encourage one another virtually. I am a part of several running Facebook groups, and it is a daily encouragement for me to check in with my running friends. We share about our running journey. We ask advice. We rally around one another through struggles. We push each other to do our best. We encourage each other through injuries and illness. It’s been one of the greatest sources of encouragement for my running journey to be a part of these groups.

Running has brought a lot of great people into my life.

Mama’s Choice – Getting Organized

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

Today’s mission is for you to declutter in any area of your home. If you have a hard time deciding, write down 4 or 5 areas on slips of paper. Then draw one out. Set your timer from 2 minutes to 15 minutes and get busy! When the timer goes off, pull out another slip of paper and set your timer again. Do this until you run out of papers. This is a really fun way to declutter and get your house cleaned before the weekend.

If you have a large area that needs to be decluttered such as a basement or garage, you can use the same principle and divide the area into sections. The goal is to move quickly and not keep handling the same stuff over and over.

Use your declutter kit for this. If you don’t have a declutter kit, you can use boxes. Label the first box, “Throw Away.” Label a second box “Put Away.” Label the third box, “Give Away.” Use these to help you work through cluttered areas.

You can do this!

Have a great week-end!

What are you avoiding in getting organized?

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

Today’s mission is for you to declutter in one area of your home. Where you have been avoiding decluttering? Set your timer for 15 minutes and see what you can fling! Make it fun. Turn on music. Include the children, if you like. My children love it when I make it a game to declutter. We see what we can accomplish as a team.

Think about letting things go that your family does not need any more. Your children can donate coats, hats, and toys that they do not need. Take a look in the coat closet and the hat rack. Look in your local area for coat drives. Several local dry cleaners and churches collect children’s coats this time of year. Declutter before the Holidays. It will make things more peaceful for you.

Let me know what you are decluttering this week!

Have a great day!

Don’t be too busy to play

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

Most of my emails have been task oriented to help you with organizing in small steps. I know you are busy. We all are busy, but the benefit of decluttering and organizing in small steps is that you also have more time to plan and enjoy your children. Don’t get so wrapped up being busy that you miss the opportunities to sit on the floor and play with your children. My children are growing, and the years of playing in the floor with them is slipping away. When you are feeling like all you have done all day is go from one project to another, I want you to stop and sit down with your kids and play. Don’t let yourself be too busy with stuff that you miss the fun of having children in the house.

Enjoy your day!

Teaching Gratitude

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

Since we are approaching Thanksgiving, it’s a great time to talk to your children about thankfulness and gratitude. You can work with them on handwriting, and they can work on notes to send to friends and family who live out of town.

If you are having a big Thanksgiving meal, they can make place mats and place cards. They can add little personal touches to encourage the recipient with words and artwork.

If they receive gifts, you can work with them on writing Thank You cards, too.

You can start a Thankfulness or Gratitude Journal, and each member of the family can have a page or section to list things they are thankful for.

Writing things down puts the information into your children’s minds in a different way, and it is a nice change of pace if they have been practicing handwriting skills.

Have a wonderful day!

Preparing for the Holidays – Getting Organized

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

Can you believe that Thanksgiving is almost here? Thanksgiving is one of my favorite Holidays. It’s a time to reflect on our blessings, and it is a time to enjoy with family. During my Zone Missions this month, I have been mindful of getting ready for the Holidays while doing them. I want my house ready for fun and celebrations with as little stress as possible on me.

This week, you have some options on where you declutter and detail clean. We are working in the main bathroom and any other area in the home that needs attention. Because I swish and swipe daily in my bathroom, I don’t have a lot to do in my main bathroom. I usually spend 1 to 2 days doing zone cleaning, and then I move on to another area of the house.

We do not have a specific week for decluttering the laundry room, basement, garage, family room, school room, etc. So this is where we fit those areas into our zone missions.

How are you doing with your menu planning this month? You can save money by menu planning and cooking simply. This will help you stretch your Holiday gift budget!

Zone Missions: The Main Bathroom and One Extra Room
Monday – Declutter Bathroom Counters & Wipe

Tuesday – Wipe down Tub/Shower

Wednesday –  Declutter Bathroom Cabinets/Drawers

Thursday – Declutter 1 Other Area in the House

Running in Races – Getting Fit

Races

November 5, 2016 Hickory Cove Trail Race 5K

November 5, 2016
Hickory Cove Trail Race 5K

Running in races helps you set goals and, for me, gives motivation to keep training. Races are also nice for tracking progress, if you run the same race more than once. Having run more than 50 races in 4 years, I have had great races, and I have had some really hard races. Both experiences have made me a stronger runner.

When you train for races and run in them regularly, you will find that you have peaks and valleys in your training and in your racing. You can train your body to be in peak performance for a race, and then on race day, the weather is different than you expected.

This will affect your performance, if it is a significant change in the weather. I run better and faster in cold, dry air. I run slower in hot, humid weather. I train and plan my races accordingly. The coldest race I ever ran in was 18 degrees with slight moisture in the air. I ran a fast race and got a personal record in that half-marathon. Then, I ran in a race this summer that was very hot and humid, I finished 3 minutes slower than my best 5K time because of the weather differences.

You will also experience peaks and valleys in your training, both in endurance and speed. You will find that you can train and hit your goal, and then you will usually have to re-group and work through some tough runs before you see improvement again. This is just a physiological response from your body, and you need to use your mind to help you through the hard training runs.

This summer has been particularly hot and humid. My training times have not been as good as the winter and spring times, but they are considerably better than last summer’s training times. This way, I can see that there is improvement. Because of my faithfulness to my training plan this summer, I will likely see improvements this fall and winter.

Practice Hospitality this Holiday Season – Getting Organized

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

Happy Friday! In the Bible, we read a lot about serving in the home. The early church met in one another’s homes. They often ate together, served together, and ministered together. In our culture, we do not see than happening. Do you practice hospitality? If you don”t, what holds you back? Is it your home? Is is a lack of finances? Is it a lack of getting to know fellow believers in your area?

This Holiday season, purpose to offer hospitality in your home. It does not have to be an elaborate event. You can even do this as a pot luck type event, or you can host a cookie exchange. There are lots of ways to offer hospitality in your home. Ask around for widows or widowers who might be along for Thanksgiving and invite them to eat with you.

To help you get ready for this, your mission today is to pull out some of your serving items and wash them. Get them ready to use! I installed new rack holders in my kitchen cabinet to hold my platter upright. I can store more in that area with the rack holders, and they don’t fall over.

Have a great week-end!
If you have any questions or tips, please email me. I enjoy hearing from my readers.

Involving the Kids in Decluttering – Getting Organized

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

Today I want you to involve your children in your zone mission. I want you to declutter one kitchen cabinet today. Pick one that is low and have your children help dig out that stuff that has gone all the way to the back. Decide on what items you really need, and what can be donated. If it’s been back in the far back of the cabinet, you probably have not used it in a while. Start making room now for any new items you might get this Holiday season. I know I am watching for a great deal on an InstaPot on Black Friday. I need to make room for it now.

Start thinking about how you want to gear your lesson plans between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I try to do some community service projects this time of the year, so I will be looking for an activity for us to participate in soon.

Have you worked on a menu plan yet? Spend a few minutes jotting down some menu ideas on your calendar. Keep it simple!

Have a great day!

Cleaning Out the Refrigerator – Getting Ready for the Holidays

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

Today’s zone mission is to clean out your refrigerator. So how does cleaning out your refrigerator relate to getting ready for the Holidays? By cleaning out your refrigerator, you will make room for some of your Holiday food purchases. You will be tossing things that are out of date. You will be making notes on what you need to get for your Holiday baking. I see that as loading the bases toward getting ready for the Holidays. I tend to clean out my refrigerator weekly, but I don’t always wipe the shelves, so that will be my goal this week. I will wipe one shelf a day starting at the top and working my way down. I should be able to do this in three days.

It’s the day after the election, and since I live on the East Coast, I check results first thing the day after the election. Use this as a wrap up discussion of the election process. Talk to your children about the “lame duck” session that now exists until Inauguration Day on January 20.

If you have any Holiday tips to pass along, please feel free to email me at Tami@TamiFox.com.

Enjoy your day!
