Goals and Routines – Getting Organized

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

Welcome to the New Year! Many people make resolutions on New Year’s Day, and often, they do not keep them. This year, I want you to look at this differently. I want you to set some goals for the year. They can be big goals or small goals, but I want you to write them down. Then, I want you to write down a plan to achieve your goals and include this in your routines. The best way to achieve your goal will be to make consistent steps toward attaining the goal.

If you want to lose weight, drink your water and add a check up on your routine list. Menu plan and choose healthy foods. Add 15 minutes of movement to your daily routine. All of these things fit into your routines, if you include them. You can write your routines on sticky notes and post them in the bathroom or on a cabinet that you see daily. You can write your routines in your Control Journal, if you have one set up.

When I set my fitness goals for the year, I write them in my fitness journal for the year with a plan of action on how to achieve them.

If you want to set a goal to declutter your home, then put decluttering in your daily schedule. After all of the years of following The FlyLady, I still declutter daily. I toss papers, or I put things in my box of items to donate. I watch how much stuff comes back into our home as well. These techniques are consistent for me to keep the clutter from building up in my home.

If you want to set other goals, write them down with a plan of action on how to achieve them. You can do it!

This week, we are doing to declutter our living rooms, and we are going to put our decorations away a little at a time.

Finish It Up Friday – Getting Organized

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

Happy Friday!

Check your To Do list. Use your timer to complete the items on your list. Keep it short and make it fun! Don’t look at your list as drudgery. Look at it as a way to bless your family. If you are overloading yourself, then drop things that can wait until next week. Your main goals are to have the house picked up, the laundry caught up, the sink shiny, and your children happy. If you have too many things to do and are grumpy, you can change that. Start with letting go of your perfectionism. Just do the best you can do.

Have a great week-end and a very Merry Christmas!

Play a Game with Your Children – Getting Organized

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

Today I want you to spend time playing a game with your children. Let them pick their favorite board game and enjoy some time just playing. We get so busy with our To Do lists that we forget to play with our children. This week we especially get caught up in doing for others, and we forget to stop and enjoy time with our children. Childhood passes so quickly. When your children approach 17 and 18 years old, you will wonder what happened to all that time. Make some memories this week with them! You will cherish them, and so will they!

No Stress This Week – Getting Organized

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

How is your stress level today? Are you ready for the Holidays? I want you to take a deep breath. Write down the things that absolutely must be done before the weekend. Do them a little at a time. I do not want you to be stressed out. I have been working on purchasing presents and wrapping them a little at a time. This helps me a lot the week before Christmas.

Encourage your children to help you around the house this week, too. They should be eager to do anything that will help them pass the time.

If you are trying to do any big projects this week, try to scale them back. Remember that real life is not Pinterest perfect. What you see on social media is what people want you to see. Behind the scenes there is stress and tears.

If you have multiple places to visit this weekend, do your best to guard some time just for your family to be at home. It is okay for you and your husband to decide to make your own traditions.

Drink your water this week. Eat healthy. Get in daily movement. Get to bed at a reasonable hour every night. All of these help your body.

Zone Mission: Declutter a dresser drawer

Taking a Christmas Break – Getting Organized

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

Have you started your Christmas break? This is the first day of our break. We started school on August 1, so the boys and I are both ready for a break. Taking a break from school work is a good thing. If you do not schedule regular breaks, please consider that taking a break helps them. Kids need time to process all the new things you have been teaching them this year. Having a break from academics helps them process this knowledge. You can still keep your routines in place, and you can have fun and educational things for them to do. But take a break from the book work.

Last summer, I took off two whole months from bookwork. One of my sons jumped two levels in his spelling in that time. I did not do anything extra to help him with spelling. I did ask that they read daily, and I believe this helped him with his spelling. I let them pick what interests them to read. I don’t give them a reading list.

Taking a break will also keep you from burning out, too. You need a break from planning and grading papers and teaching. So take a couple of weeks off from school and enjoy this season with your children.

This week, our zone is the master bedroom. Use the missions with your children and ask them to do missions in their rooms, too.

Zone Missions: The Master Bedroom
Monday – Declutter the flat surfaces in the bedroom and detail dust

Tuesday – Declutter drawers

Setting Running Goals

Setting Goals

Setting goals keeps me moving forward. I set different goals for different seasons. For the first two years that I ran, my goals were mostly centered around adding distance to my running. After my second marathon, I started working on speed. This is probably a normal progression as a runner tries to find their favorite distance to run.

The couch-to-5K app helped me in the beginning with alternating running and walking. Each week it progressed with the amount of time I would run versus the amount of time I walked to recover. I did not always hit these running goals, but I kept trying. It took me a little longer than the app allowed for me to run a mile without walking. Everyone progresses differently. My advice is to just keep doing YOUR best.

As you are adding distance to your running, you need to listen to your body and slowly add distance each week. By adding smaller increases, you lessen your risk of injury. A good way to look at it is to add around 1 mile at a time or no more than 2 miles at a time. After 3 weeks of adding miles, it is good to back off and give your body some recovery.

Another way to help you reach distance goals is to sign up for races with your goal distance in mind. Start with 5K races, and as you add miles, you start looking at 10K races. You will progress faster than you think. If you never want to go farther than a 5K, that is okay, too. You will find what you like, and it will also depend on how much time you have to devote to training. You can do a 5K comfortably with three days a week of training. If you want to progress to half marathons and full marathons, you will find that you will train for five to six days a week. So setting goals for distance will be determined on how often you want to train during the week.

If you want to set a goal for how fast you run a certain distance, you will want to add in weekly speed work at a track. You can look online for speed workouts, but I will share what I have done to give you an idea of how it works. You will need a stopwatch, running app on your phone, or a watch that computes your speed and distance. I use a Garmin watch that tracks my speed and distance. For track work, I switch the settings from miles to kilometers. Most speed training plans are set up in meters. If you are running on a track that has lines and lines, you will see different markings. An average running track is .25 miles around or 400 meters. Some will have start lines and finish lines marked. The lanes will have graduated lines to account for the difference around the track from lane 1 (the shortest) to lane 8 or 10 (the longest). Watch some track running on YouTube. When doing speed work, you will also want to run a warm up that is anywhere from 1 mile to 3 miles, and when you are finished, you will want to run a cool down from 1 mile to 3 miles.

track

Speed Work:

200 meters running with 200 meters of recovery walking or slow running

A typical 200 meter plan for me would be to run 200 meters fast and then 200 meters recovery and do it 14 times. I would put it on my training calendar like this:

14 x 200m, (200m recovery)

You would want to pick a goal speed that is faster than your normal speed for the faster running speeds. I started with trying to run a half a lap around the track (200 meters) at an 8:00 minute mile pace which is around 1:00 minute for 200 meters. I use an online speed calculator to help me figure this out. (http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/4/4_1/96.shtml)

As the weeks progress, I will do fewer times of a prescribed distance, and I will increase the distance. Here is a sample:

Week 1 – 14 x 200m (200m recovery); half a lap around a .25 mile track

Week 2 – 12 x 400m (400m recovery); full lap around a .25 mile track

Week 3 – 8 x 600m (400m recovery); one and a half laps around a .25 mile track

Week 4 – 6 x 800m (400m recovery); two laps around a .25 mile track

Week 5 – 5 x 1000m (400m recovery); two and a half laps around a .25 mile track

Week 6 – 4 x 1200m (400m recovery); three laps around a .25 mile track

Week 7 – 3 x 1600m (800m recovery); 4 laps around a .25 mile track (This is like doing 1 mile repeats.)

If you read about a speed ladder, this is what it would look like:

400m, 800m, 1200m, 1600m, 1200m, 800m, 400m

You would do a 400m recovery in between each of these.

Different training plans will prescribe different speed workouts. I am just giving you these as an example that I think is the most common. When you start doing speed workouts, you will have to figure out how to count your repetitions using your stopwatch, app on your phone, or running watch. I think the running watch is the easiest, since I can switch to kilometers and use the “lap” button for each segment. That keeps a record of the run for me, and I can write this information down in my running notebook.

You do not have to race to set goals, but I have found it motivating to have a race to look forward to as I am training.

Happy Running!

27 Fling Friday – Getting Organized

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

It’s Friday! Let’s make today a fun day for everyone! Turn on some music. Set the timer and do a 27 Fling Boogie through the house. Find 27 things you can give away. Challenge your kids to do the same thing in their bedrooms. Then take the items out to your car. You want to declutter as much as you can, so you have room for the new things your children will be receiving next week.

If you haven’t taken your family for an evening ride to look at Christmas lights, make a plan to do that this weekend. Make some memories!

Does 15 minutes work? Getting Organized

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

Does using 15 minutes to declutter work? I can say a resounding, “Yes.” I have been following The FlyLady for many years, and I have implemented her system in my home with my children. Using 15 minutes has made a huge difference in my home. I was looking back at pictures from several years ago, and it is funny to see the clutter in the background of the pictures. It all started with a timer and 15 minutes. I shined my sink, and I kept this habit in place as I started decluttering daily. I still declutter regularly. I keep a box in my van of items to donate when I am out doing errands. Some weeks it might be a small box, and some weeks, it might be a big box.

As I progressed with the different monthly habits, I also taught my children how to help me bless our home. I made decluttering a game. I included them and made it fun. I see the fruits of this in my young adult children who now bless their homes. It will feel like you are not making fast progress. You might feel like you are moving slower than a turtle when you are including your children in blessing your home. It’s ok. It is better if they are helping your bless your home versus them playing in a different part of the house making a mess. You want to channel their energy in a productive way.

After blessing your home together, then you need to reward everyone with some play time. If you do not have play time scheduled into your day, I want you to add it to your To Do list right now. I want you to make memories and have fun with your children.

Ten Days – Getting Organized

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

In ten days we will be celebrating Christmas Eve. What else do you have left on your list? Have you been procrastinating? Today is anti-procrastination day, so make a list of the things you need to do to be ready for Christmas. Pick one today and do it! Use your timer and set it for 15 minutes. You can do this! You want to enjoy the Holidays, and you do not want to be trying to do everything at the last minute. You don’t need this stress. You want a peaceful Holiday.

The Zone Mission today is to declutter under the bathroom sink or declutter the things in one of the drawers. I have both a cabinet, and I have 3 drawers. I try to rotate where I declutter each month, so it is not overwhelming. Resist the urge to dump everything out. Just use your timer and have a trash can handy. Spend 5 to 15 minutes doing this. We will do it again in the future.

Have a great day!
