Today I want to share some tips on menu planning. Some of you struggle in this area, and for years, I did not do a good job with menu planning. As my life got busier and I had more children, I knew I had to get serious about menu planning. It truly does save me time and money to menu plan. I have done my menu planning different ways and shopped on different days of the week, but I have a routine now that works for my family.

On Friday night, I sit down and start a menu plan for our evening meal. Some weeks, I will plan lunch and breakfast, too. Last fall, I planned meals for each of the 50 United States. So I have done some major menu planning, too. After I plan my weekly menu, I check my freezer and pantry to see what I have on hand. Then I start my grocery list. I shop on Saturday mornings or afternoons depending on our plans for the day.

Here’s a sample of my weekly menu plan for this week.

Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday
B – Eggs and Bacon B – Cereal B – Waffles and Bacon B – Eggs and Bacon B – Cereal B – Waffles and Bacon B – Eggs and Bacon
L – Pizza L – Sandwiches L – Leftovers or Sandwiches L – Leftovers or Sandwiches L – Leftovers or Sandwiches L – Leftovers or Sandwiches L – Leftovers or Sandwiches
D – Hamburgers D – Spaghetti and Salad with Garlic Bread D – Slow Cooker Beef and Broccoli, Salad, Bread D – Slow Cooker BBQ Chicken Breast, Salad, Bread D – Slow Cooker Buffalo Chicken, Salad, Bread D – Slow Cooker Jambalaya, Rice, Salad, and Bread D – Rotisserie Chicken, Salad, Bread

Everyone in the family helps with meal prep and clean up. The boys also help me cook and are responsible for getting their lunch. Some days they also fix their own breakfast. I keep fruit and nuts on hand for snacks because growing boys tend to want to eat all the time. I am using freezer meals that I prepared last month for the slow cooker meals. I will have minimal prep this week. I will put out a freezer bag from the freezer to thee refrigerator each night. I have written down 4 of the freezer meals this week. I may not pick out the corresponding bag to each day of the week, but I will use 4 different meals for the slow cooker this week.

Tell me how you menu plan and what works for you.
